MEETINGS
The Adirondack Landowners Association hosts two annual membership meetings. The first meeting is held traditionally in early May…this is the official business meeting for the organization. Annual elections are held to select a board of directors followed by a directors meeting to elect officers.
The spring meeting normally begins on a Friday evening with a cocktail and dinner reception, followed by the regular meeting on Saturday morning. We traditionally have a number of guest speakers who come from local and state government or represent one of the Adirondack stakeholder groups. Many of our members combine this meeting with a "spring trip" into camp.
The winter meeting is held in early December and is always hosted by the Adirondack League Club in Old Forge. The ALC is one of the oldest and largest private clubs of its kind in the country…they were formed in 1890 and have an amazing preserve. The history of the club combined with a unique backwoods setting makes for a memorable experience for everyone.
The winter meeting is the real highlight of our year and is very well attended by our members and their guests. The meeting starts on Friday evening with cocktails and dinner followed by our annual auction fundraiser….the auction is a fun and entertaining part of the meeting. Saturday morning following breakfast we hold a members meeting which features presentations and discussion on a wide range of Adirondack issues affecting private landowners. Many ALA members come early to this event to enjoy some of beautiful scenery and outdoor activities available at the League Club. This is one event you don’t want to miss.

The Adirondack Landowners Association is pleased to announce that their Annual Spring Membership Meeting will be held at the scenic Minnowbrook Conference Center in Blue Mt. Lake, NY….May 11-12, 2012. This meeting is always an informative and interesting event. This year’s meeting will focus on the private stewardship contributions of ALA members to the Adirondacks and beyond. NYS Comptroller Tom DiNapoli will be our special guest for this event.

The Comptroller’s office has been very supportive of ALA efforts to help with education and prevention of invasive species in the Park and throughout NYS. We are delighted that the Comptroller has decided to join us…it should make this meeting a very special event for everyone.
Additionally, our stewardship agenda will be highlighted by a presentation from Dan Josephson and Cliff Kraft from Cornell University. Cornell has a long standing tradition of working with ALA members and other private landowners in the Adirondacks in the areas of fisheries research and wildlife management. They will be joined by several other ALA members who will offer insights into their stewardship programs.
There will be a Friday nite social & cocktail hour followed by dinner. This is a great time for members to reconnect after the winter and get ready for the spring and summer season. The membership meeting starts promptly at 9am on Saturday May 12…lunch will follow the conclusion of the meeting.
We will also have a number of invited guests from the Adirondack community including state and local elected political leaders and key representatives from various organizations.
Please check back on the website for updates in the weeks ahead…information will also be sent to all ALA members as it is available.
The December membership meeting was a booming success. Whether measured by attendance, auction activity, guest speakers or the great discussion of important issues, it was benchmark event.

Our annual winter auction was a great success because of the generous auction items supplied by members and supporters, and the willingness of those attending to support the work of ALA.

Rob and Mike gave us a summary of their organizations’ activities in promoting an economically viable and environmentally responsible forest enterprise...which is of importance to many of our members who generate revenues from the harvesting of timber on their property. Steve Hamilton spoke of the communications between President Tom Williams and Senior Advisor Ross Whaley and his office.

Most impressive was Steve’s citing the follow up activities of the State Comptroller’s office in response to issues concerning invasive species and the stewardship role of ALA members in the Park.
The business meeting covered a variety of topics including: ALA’s education program aimed at reducing invasive species, pending DEC appointments of Region 5 Director and Assistant Commissioner for Natural Resources, status of the Adirondack Club and Resort project which received a permit from the Park Agency in January, the Bob Marshall Wild Land Complex, current appeal to the court’s ruling in the Lows Lake Decision, and impacts of Tropical Storm Irene. During the meeting we were also pleased to have commentary from Inlet Town Supervisor, John Frey.

As is our custom, members and guests gave us an update on the activities of other Adirondack Organizations. There were updates from the Adirondack Nature Conservancy and Land Trust, the Wild Center, the Adirondack Museum, the View and Shingle Shanty Preserve and Research Station.

This brief meeting summary fails to capture the camaraderie, the sharing of purpose, the learning and the fun that prevailed in this meeting. For members who share this opinion, we encourage you to invite your colleagues and fellow property owners to join us for the next members meeting. We have established a high standard that we will try to surpass in the future.
