ALA Announces Focus on InvasivesAs a follow-up to our May meeting we worked on some strategies to help the ALA take a leadership role in the fight against invasives in the Park. After conferring with NYS Senator Betty Little and folks from DEC and APPIP a plan of action was put in place. Ross Whaley and Tom Williams attended the recent AATV meeting held in Lake Placid and met with Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward and other local government officials to get their support for this important cause. Tom made a presentation at the AATV meeting outlining ALA’s role to help educate those who use Adirondack waterways and help prevent the spread of invasives.
1...help get informational brochures to everyone who registers a boat, trailer, watercraft or ATV thru local DMV offices
We have also reached out to the NYS County Clerks association for their support as well as the New York State Snowmobile Association. Working creatively with all the user groups, stakeholders and local government will help make this effort successful.
We will soon have a supply of brochures for ALA members to use at their clubs and camps. Additionally, there are a number of documents and posters available on line that can be reproduced and utilized. Those links appear at the end of this article. The ALA has always been a leader in promoting sound stewardship and conservation practices for our lands and waters...but, we realize that invasive species do not respect property boundaries nor do they care whether the land is private or public. Taking a leadership position on this very important issue, serves to further highlight the important role that private landowners play in the Adirondack Park.
